Refimprove date April 2007 One source article date March 2009 The term abovemeansealevel AMSL refers to the elevation on the ground or altitude in the air of any object, relative to the average sealevel datum geodesy datum . AMSL is used extensively in radio both in broadcasting and other telecommunications uses by engineer s to determine the coverage area a station will be able to reach. It is also used in aviation , where most heights are recorded and reported with respect to AMSL see flight level , and in the atmospheric sciences . Definition The concept of a meansealevel is in itself rather artificial, because it is not possible to determine a figure for meansealevel for the entire planet, and it varies quite a lot even on a much smaller scale. This is because the sea is in constant motion, affected by the high and low pressure zones above it, the tides, local gravitational differences, and so forth. The best one can do is to pick a spot and calculate the meansealevel at that point and use it as a datum geodesy datum . For example, the Ordnance Survey uses a height datum based on the measurements of meansealevel at a particular gauge at Newlyn , Cornwall from 1915 to 1921 ref http www.pol.ac.uk ntslf tgi ntobs.html Newlyn Tidal Observatory National Oceanography Centre NERC ref for their maps of Great Britain, and this datum is actually some 80  cm different from the meansealevel reading obtained on the other side of the country. Meters AbovemeansealevelaboveseaLevel is a standard metric system metric measurement of the elevation of a location in reference to historic meansealevel the determination of what actually constitutes meansealevel over time however, may be determined by other parameters, such as the effects of climate history and climate change , and may have differed in the past, as well as in the future, from that established by historic, modern, documented elevations. Uses Meters abovesealevel is the standard measurement of the elevation or altitude of a geographic location such as a town , mountain , or other landmark the elevation of the top of a building or other nonbuilding structure structure or the altitude of an airplane or other flying object. How determined The elevation or altitude in Meters abovesealevel of any location, object, or point, can be determined in a number of ways. Synopsis Fish AboveSeaLevel is about Talal Rabee Zureikat a young Ammani professional, who discovers upon his father s death that he is penniless. His late father, in an attempt to shore up his failing investments, mortgaged the family house. Talal has few days to save the family house in Amman from foreclosure. His only way out is to sell a farm house once owned by his late father in a village by the Dead Sea with a dark past. At the village he meets Dawoud Abdallah Dghemaat a young farmer who lives in the farm house. Before Talal can do anything with the farm house, Dawoud s approval is essential. such as pressure or temperature are sometimes reduced to meansealevel. In general circulation ...In aviation and atmospheric sciences , an above ground level AGL altitude is an altitude measured with respect to the underlying earth s surface ground surface . This is as opposed to altitude elevation abovemeansealevel AMSL , or in broadcast engineering height above average terrain HAAT . In other words, these expressions AGL, AMSL, or HAAT indicate where the zero level or reference altitude is located. Aviation A pilot flying a plane under instrument flight rules typically under poor visibility conditions must rely on its altimeter to decide when to deploy the aircraft undercarriage and prepare for landing. Therefore the pilot needs reliable information on the altitude of the plane with respect to the air strip. The altimeter, which is normally a barometer calibrated in units of distance instead of atmospheric pressure , must therefore be set in such a way as to indicate the altitude of the craft above ground. This is done by communicating with the control tower of the airport to get the current surface pressure and setting the altimeter so as to report a null altitude AGL on the ground of that airport. Confusing AGL with AMSL, or improper calibration of the altimeter may result in controlled flight into terrain , a crash under pilot control. Geodesy The SeaLevel Datum of 1929 was the vertical control datum geodesy datum established for vertical control surveying in the United States United States of America by the General Adjustment of 1929. The datum was used to measure elevation altitude above, and depression geology depression wikt depth depth below, meansealevel MSL . Meansealevel was measured at 26 tide gauges 21 in the United States and 5 in Canada . The datum was defined by the observed heights of meansealevel at the 26 tide gauges and by the set of elevations of all bench marks resulting from the adjustment. The adjustment required a total of 66,315 miles 106,724 km of leveling with 246 closed circuits and 25 circuits at sealevel. Since the SeaLevel Datum of 1929 was a hybrid model, it was not a pure model of meansealevel , the geoid , or any other equipotential surface. Therefore, it was renamed the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 NGVD 29 in 1973. The NGVD 29 was subsequently replaced by the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 NAVD 88 based upon the General Adjustment of the North American Datum of 1988. They are also fitting the stations with Photovoltaic module solar panel s so they can continue to operate even if the mains power supply is interrupted by severe weather.
