  1. Flourish, Mighty Land (Prokofiev)

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Flourish, Mighty Land , Op. 114, variably called Flourish, Mighty Homeland or Prosper, Mighty Country is a cantata written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1947, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the October Revolution , along with his Thirty Years Prokofiev Thirty Years . Background In contrast to the monumental Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution Prokofiev Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution , this cantata, in one movement, lasts for a mere 8 minutes. The short duration was obviously a disappointment for the Soviet authority, which had expected something in a grandiose manner cf. Shostakovich s Symphony No. 9 Shostakovich Symphony No. 9 . It is scored for chorus and orchestra. The cantata, with much first rate music as with his other political works , has been unjustly neglected purely for its pro Communistic lyrics. Whether Prokofiev truly agrees with the lyrics is something we can never be sure about. However, Prokofiev was not in a position to turn down such a commission. The chorus parts, expressive and melodic, are typical of Prokofiev s warmer style. Analysis The cantata opens with a jaunty trumpet theme in D flat major, spiced with the typical Prokofievian note slips. After a repeat of the theme by muted trumpet and piccolo, strings and woodwinds continue to develop the theme. The chorus then introduce a glowing theme a cappella , which alternates with pure orchestral sections. The climax is reached half way, when the chorus and the orchestra perform together. Prokofiev s mastery in choral writing is demonstrated here when the female voices repeat the word Glory with male voices singing the melody below. The chorus repeats the a cappella sections again, this time interrupted by marching orchestral chords reminiscent of the comical chords of the drunk monks in Prokofiev s opera Betrothal in a Monastery Prokofiev Betrothal in a Monastery . The chorus then dies o ...   more details

It replaced the Palestinian pound mil , which was the 1000th part of the Palestinian pound , a currency issued by the British Mandate of Palestine prior to May 1948. The word Pruta was loanword borrowed from Mishnah Mishnaic Hebrew language Hebrew , in which it meant a coin of smaller value. 1. Jayasthitimalla

Unreferenced date March 2009 Jayasthiti Malla was a 14th century king of Nepal belonging to the Malla Nepal Malla dynasty . The early Malla period, a time of continuing trade and the reintroduction of Nepalese coinage, saw the steady growth of the small towns that became Kathmandu , Patan, Lalitpur Patan , and Bhadgaon . Royal pretenders in Patan and Bhadgaon struggled with their main rivals, the lords of Banepa in the east, relying on the populations of their towns as their power bases. The citizens of Bhadgaon viewed Devaladevi as the legitimate, independent queen. The betrothal in 1354 of her granddaughter to Jayasthiti Malla, a man of obscure but apparently high birth, eventually led to the reunification of the land and a lessening of strife among the towns. By 1370 Jayasthiti Malla controlled Patan, and in 1374 his forces defeated those in Banepa and Pharping . He then took full control of the country from 1382 until 1395, reigning in Bhadgaon as the husband of the queen and in Patan with full regal titles. His authority was not absolute because the lords of Banepa were able to pass themselves off as kings to ambassadors of the China Chinese Ming Dynasty Ming emperor who traveled to Nepal during this time. Nevertheless, Jayasthiti Malla united the entire valley and its environs under his sole rule, an accomplishment still remembered with pride by Nepalese, particularly Newar s. The first comprehensive codification of law in Nepal, based on the dharma of ancient religious textbooks, is ascribed to Jayasthitimalla.
