  1. Ice blasting

Image Ice blasting.JPG right thumb 300px Preemptive ice blasting on the Rideau River in Ottawa Ice blasting is the use of explosives to break up ice in rivers, greatly aiding navigation systems. This is done during the spring when snow is melting and river ice is breaking up. There is always a chance that the ice flows could collide creating an ice jam and blocking the river. The river, filled with melt water, will quickly flood and often cause damage to nearby settlements. Thus in most northern areas governments quickly act to break up the ice jams before they can do much damage. This is most easily done with explosives. These explosives may be planted from the shore, or in some cases by helicopter. Explosives can also be remotely delivered by artillery or dropped by bombers. In the large rivers of the Siberia the Russian airforce is sometimes called in to bomb ice jams. Some districts, where flooding is especially common, do preemptive ice blasting. The city of Ottawa , Canada , for instance, blasts the Rideau River each spring to break up the ice. In 1994, for instance, 10,000 sticks of dynamite were used to break up ice along 9 kilometres of the river. ref Grant Hopkins Ice blasting on Rideau will have to be limited to avoid heavy fish toll, study says. The Ottawa Citizen. Jun 12, 1994. pg. D.6 ref Ice blasting has a number of disadvantages. It is expensive and dangerous requiring highly skilled explosives experts. When blasting is occurring the public must be warned to keep their distance. The blasting has negative environmental consequences. Fish and other river creatures are inevitably killed and the river bottom is scarred. Unexploded ordnance can also be a concern where remote delivery is used. References reflist Tom Spears. 1. Rock blasting

Rock blasting is the controlled use of explosives and other methods such as gas pressure blasting pyrotechnics or plasma processess, to excavate, break down or remove rock geology rock . It is practised most often in mining , quarrying and civil engineering such as dam or road construction. Except in mining, the result of rock blasting is often known as a rock cut . The use of explosives in mining goes back to the year 1627 , when gunpowder was first used in place of mechanical tools in the Hungary Hungarian now Slovakia n town of Bansk tiavnica . The innovation spread quickly throughout Europe and the Americas. Rock blasting currently utilizes many different varieties of Explosive material Explosives with different compositions and performance properties. Higher velocity explosives are used for relatively hard rock in order to shatter and break the rock, while low velocity explosives are used in soft rocks to generate more gas pressure and a greater heaving effect. The most commonly used explosives in mining today are ANFO based blends due to lower cost than Dynamite . In 1990, 2.1 million tonnes 2.32 million short tons of commercial explosives were consumed in the USA , representing an estimated expenditure of 3.5 to 4 billion 1993 dollars on blasting. Australia had the highest explosives consumption that year at 500 million tonnes 551 million short tons , with Scandinavia Scandinavian countries another leader in rock blasting Persson et al. 1994 1 . File BristleBlasting.JPG thumb right Bristle blasting. The accelerator bar may be seen to the left of the brush wheel. Bristle blasting is a Abrasion mechanical mechanical abrasion cleaning process that is performed on metallic surfaces by a brush like rotary power tool . The tool consists of hardened high carbon steel wire bristle tips that are bent forward to a hand held machine. During operation, the rotating bristle tips are brought into direct contact with the metallic surface. The bristle tips strike the surface with kinetic energy that is equivalent to processes that use grit blast media. This repeated contact of sharp bristle tips with the target surface results in localized impact, rebound, and the formation of craters, thereby simultaneously cleaning and coarsening the surface, while exposing a contamination free base metal. ref cite journal last Stango first Robert J. last2 Khullar first2 Piyush title Introduction to the Bristle Blasting Process for Simultaneous Corrosion Removal Anchor Profile journal ACA Journal of Corrosion and Materials year 2008 volume 33 issue 5 pages 26 31 url http www.monti.de downloads monti industrial pressrelease1.pdf ref Differences from conventional ... stiffness. 1. Drilling and blasting

refimprove date January 2008 Before the advent of tunnel boring machine s, drilling and blasting was the only economical way of excavating long tunnel s through hard rock, where digging is not possible. Even today, the method is still used in the construction of tunnels, such as in the construction of the L tschberg Base Tunnel . The decision whether to construct a tunnel using a TBM or using a drill and blast method includes a number of factors such as Tunnel length Managing the risks of variations in ground quality Required speed of construction The required shape of the tunnel Tunnel length is a key issue that needs to be addressed because large TBMs for a rock tunnel have a high capital cost, but because they are usually quicker than a drill and blast tunnel the price per metre of tunnel is lower. ref cite book last Kolymbas first Dimitrios title Tunelling and tunnel mechanics a rational approach to tunnelling year 2005 publisher Springer Verlag isbn 3 540 25196 0 pages 444 ref This means that shorter tunnels tend to be less economical to construct with a TBM and are therefore usually constructed by drill and blast. Managing ground conditions can also have a significant effect on the choice with different methods suited to different hazards in the ground. History While drilling and blasting saw limited use in pre industrial times using gunpowder such as with the Blue Ridge Tunnel in the United States, built in the 1850s , it was not until more powerful and safer explosive s, such as dynamite patented 1867 , as well as powered drill s were developed, that its potential was fully realised. Drilling and blasting was successfully used to construct tunnels throughout the world, notably the Fr jus Rail Tunnel , the St. Gotthard Tunnel , the Simplon Tunnel , the Jungfraubahn .... Reed and his new cohorts recorded the LP in a Los Angeles studio. Inspiration had apparently run dry as only one of the songs, Talking Back issued as a single , could be considered on a par with the band s previous output.
