Stack machines Image WeightStack.JPG thumb 175px The weight stack from a cable machine each plate weighs 6  kg . A stack machine &mdash also called a stack or rack &mdash has a set of massive rectangular plates that are pierced by a vertical bar which has holes drilled in it to accept a pin. Each of the plates has a channel on its underside or a hole through the middle, as shown in the diagram that aligns with one of the holes. When the pin is inserted through the channel into the hole, all of the plates above the pin rest upon it, and are lifted when the bar rises. The plates below do not rise. This allows the same machine to provide several levels of resistance over the same range of motion with an adjustment that requires very little force to accomplish in itself. The means of lifting the bar varies. Some machines have a roller at the top of the bar that sits on a lever. A catch weight is a term used in combat sports such as boxing and mixed martial arts to describe a weight limit for a fight that does not fall in line with the traditional limits for weight classes. In boxing , a catch weight is negotiated when the weigh ins are conducted a day before the fight. Explanation Strictly speaking, a catch weight in boxing is used to describe a weight limit for a fight that does not fall in line with the limits for the expanded weight classes after the traditional rules of day of fight were changed to day before fight weigh ins and after the traditional 8 weight divisions were expanded to 17 weight classes. The catch weight is not only to provide a level playing field but also to prevent weight mismatches that can endanger the fighters. And more importantly, the catch weight is to ensure the fight is not canceled due last minute disagreement on fight time. A case of a weight mismatch is the Arturo Gatti vs Joey Gamache fight. In order to fight for a championship in these weight classes the fighters must come in to the fight at or below said weight. 1. Weight class

unreferenced date May 2010 Weight classes are divisions of competition used to match competitors against others of their own size. This reduces the exclusion of smaller athletes in sports where physical size gives a significant advantage. Weight classes are used in a variety of sports, especially combat sports such as boxing , wrestling , and mixed martial arts . The existence of weight divisions gives rise to the practice of weight cutting . It is generally considered an advantage to be the largest individual in a weight division, therefore some athletes will work hard to lose weight through dieting and dehydration prior to weigh ins to meet the required weight class. Two alternatives exist to formal weight classes catch weight and openweight . 1. Weight on bit

Dicdef Weight on bit http www.osha.gov SLTC etools oilandgas glossary of terms glossary of terms w.html WOB , as expressed in the oil industry , is the amount of downward force exerted on the Drill bit Well drilling bits drill bit and is normally measured in thousands of pounds. Weight on bit is provided by drill collars, which are thick walled tubular pieces machined from solid bars of steel, usually plain carbon steel but sometimes of nonmagnetic nickel copper alloy or other nonmagnetic premium alloys. Gravity acts on the large mass of the collars to provide the downward force needed for the bits to efficiently break rock. To accurately control the amount of force applied to the bit, the driller carefully monitors the surface weight measured while the bit is just off the bottom of the wellbore. Next, the drillstring and the drill bit , is slowly and carefully lowered until it touches bottom. After that point, as the driller continues to lower the top of the drillstring, more and more weight is applied to the bit, and correspondingly less weight is measured as hanging at the surface. If the surface measurement shows 20,000 pounds 9080 kg less weight than with the bit off bottom, then there should be 20,000 pounds force on the bit in a vertical hole .
