cleanup date January 2011 orphan date January 2011 CardiovasculardiseaseCardiovasculardisease CVD continues to have a major impact on the health of Australia ns in terms of prevalence, Mortality rate mortality , morbidity , burden of disease and expenditure. An estimated 3.7 million Australians, 19 of the population, have a long term cardiovascular condition and around 1.4 million Australians have a disability associated with the disease. CVD remains our biggest cause of death, accounting for 45,670 deaths 34 of all deaths in Australia in 2006. In 2003, it accounted for 18 of the total Australian burden of disease. The number and rate of deaths from CVD have fallen considerably from the peak levels experienced in the late 1960s and early 1970s when CVD was responsible for around 60,000 deaths annually, or roughly 55 of all deaths each year. These major gains have been attributed to a combination of research, improvements in prevention and detection of cardiovasculardisease, and better clinical management of people with the disease. There is a close interrelationship between CVD and other important chronic conditions, including diabetes and chronic kidney disease . ref http www.heartfoundation.org.au SiteCollectionDocuments AIHW website Accessed 21 April 2009 12.35 ref Diabetes An estimated 275 Australians develop diabetes every day. Expert subject Medicine date November 2008 Refimprove date December 2007 Cardiovascular pathology is the study of disease s of the heart and blood vessel s. Atherosclerosis main Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis is the most common vascular disease. It is the main cause of death of approximately 60 of people in the developed world. Citation needed date May 2007 The word atherosclerosis is derived from the Greek language Greek athere porridge and scleros hardness . Atherosclerosis is a disease that affects medium to large arteries . Its predilection for branches and bends has become better understood from flow modeling. High shear laminar flow, such as at the external curvature or medial flow divider is protective. In contrast, at the lateral walls modeled best at the Carotid artery carotid bifurcation , shear is low at best and often becomes turbulent or non laminar, producing oscillating vectors of shear stress. This area of research was pioneered by Glagov in the 1980s and recently its molecular mechanism has been worked out in greater detail. Citation needed date May 2007 Atherosclerosis is the main cause of ischaemic coronary heart disease, carotid artery stenosis by occlusion or thromboembolism. In turn, this can cause ischaemia in the cerebral arteries , presenting either as transient ischaemic attack or Cerebrum cerebral infarction. Abdominal aortic atherosclerotic aneurysm s, where the main artery in the abdomen becomes abnormally wide with a thin wall, can burst. Peripheral vascular disease PVD , which causes intermittent claudication or gangrene of the extremities and pain in the legs when walking, can be relieved by rest. Heart attack and stroke are very loose terms. Heart attack most commonly indicates myocardial infarction . It is sometimes used to denote dysrhythmia . Unreferenced date December 2009 The cardiovascular centre is a part of the human brain responsible for the regulation of the rate at which the heart beats. It is found in the Medulla oblongata medulla . Normally, the heart beats without nervous control, but in some situations e.g., exercise, body trauma , the cardiovascular centre is responsible for altering the rate at which the heart beats. It also mediates respiratory sinus arrhythmia . The cardiovascular centre effects changes to the heart rate via sympathetic nervous system sympathetic fibres to speed up the heart rate and the vagus nerve to slow down the heart rate . The accelerator and vagus nerves both connect to the sinoatrial node SA node . The cardiovascular centre also increases the stroke volume of the heart that is, the amount of blood it pumps . These two changes help to regulate the cardiac output , so that a sufficient amount of blood reaches tissue. Hormones like adrenaline can affect the cardiovascular centre and cause it to increase the rate of impulses sent to the sinoatrial node, or cardiac pacemaker , thus increasing the rate of the heart beat. Chemoreceptors may also prompt this regulation. orphan date July 2010 Cardiovascular drift CVD, CV sub drift sub is the phenomenon where some Circulatory system cardiovascular responses begin a time dependent change, or drift after around 10 minutes of exercise in a warm or neutral environment. It is characterised by decreases in mean Blood pressure arterial pressure and stroke volume and a parallel increase in heart rate . It is influenced by many factors, most notably the ambient temperature, Dehydration Avoiding dehydration hydration and the amount of muscle tissue activated during exercise. To promote cooling, blood flow to the skin is increased, resulting in a shift in fluids from blood plasma to the skin tissue. This results in a decrease in pulmonary arterial pressure and reduced stroke volume in the heart. To maintain cardiac output at reduced pressure, the heart rate must be increased. orphan date December 2009 Cardiovascular Institute of the South is a company based in Louisiana , United States which operates 12 medical clinics which offer cardiovascular care. Dr. Craig Walker is the group s founder and president. The company was founded in 1983 as the Houma Heart Clinic in Houma, Louisiana , a community which then had one of the highest death rates from cardiovasculardisease in the nation. The town was in the midst of an oil bust and the medical arena had no critical care unit, no catheterization laboratory experience, no sub specialists and a lack of nursing staff. The company expanded to other communities and continues to grow. In 28 years, CIS has grown from a one man practice under the leadership of Dr. Walker to a world renowned practice with more than 35 physicians and 500 team members in 12 cities throughout south Louisiana. CIS has made significant contributions to the advancement and development of non surgical treatments for cardiovasculardisease and is a world leader in treating peripheral arterial disease. The institute has earned an international reputation for providing state of the art cardiovascular care and has received international acclaim as a leader of research and development by participating in a growing number of research trials. Today, CIS physicians continue to serve as clinical investigators for many new and innovative medical devices and often share their knowledge by lecturing around the country about the latest methods of treating both cardiac and peripheral arterial disease.
