Enos died November 4, 1962 was the first chimpanzee that was launched into Earth orbit. Enos was purchased from the Miami Rare Bird Farm on April 3, 1960. He completed more than 1,250 hours of training for his mission at the University of Kentucky and Holloman United States Air Force Air Force Base. His training was more intense than that of Ham the Chimp Ham , the Americans first chimp in space, because Enos would be exposed to weightlessness and a higher g force g for longer periods of time. His training included psychomotor training and aircraft flights. Enos was selected to make the first orbital animal flight only three days before the launch. Two months before allowing a chimp to be launched into orbit, NASA had launched Mercury Atlas 4 on September 13, 1961, to conduct the same mission with a crewman simulator in the spacecraft. Enos flew into space on board Mercury Atlas 5 on November 29, 1961. He completed his first orbit in 1 hour and 28.5 minutes. ref Animals In Space From Research Rockets to the Space Shuttle, Chris Dubbs and Colin Burgess author Colin Burgess , 2007 ref Enos was originally scheduled to complete three orbits, but was brought back after the second orbit because the spacecraft was not maintaining proper Attitude dynamics and control attitude . According to observers, Enos jumped for joy and ran around the deck of the recovery ship enthusiastically shaking the hands of his rescuers. Enos s flight was a full dress rehearsal for the next Mercury launch on February 20, 1962, which would make Lt. Colonel John Glenn the first American to orbit the Earth, after astronauts Alan Shepard, Jr. and Gus Grissom s successful suborbital space flights. On November 4, 1962, Enos died of dysentery caused by shigellosis , which was resistant to ...   more details

CHCI s co directors are Roger Fouts and Deborah Fouts , Mary Lee Jensvold is the Assistant Director. Roger Fouts is Director of Research for Central Washington University . Resident chimpanzees Washoe chimpanzee Washoe , 1966 30 October 2007. Washoe is the first non human primate to learn some rudimentary forms of ASL, a true human language. Loulis , 1978. Loulis is Washoe s adopted son and was the subject of a project that examined whether he would learn sign language from other chimpanzees. The complete research was not published in a peer reviewed journal, but can be found in a book published in 1989 entitled Teaching Sign Language to Chimpanzees edited by Allen and Beatrix Gardner. Tatu, 1975 Dar, 1976 Moja, 1972 2002 History In September 1980 , Washoe chimpanzee Washoe , Loulis , and Moja moved to Central Washington University . Tatu and Dar followed the next year. The chimpanzees were originally housed on the third floor of the university s psychology complex. Roger Fouts and Deborah Fouts with their students advocated the campus and the state legislature for a specialized facility for the chimpanzees. The CHCI complex was opened on May 7, 1993. Mission CHCI works to promote advocacy of chimpanzee conservation and the promotion of primate intellect. The sanctuary hosts public sessions, known as Chimposiums, which allow the public to see the chimps in action. The sessions include a classroom section where the project is introduced and the visitors learn about the plight of chimpanzees in both captive and free living situations, followed by a session observing and interacting with the chimps. 1. Chimpanzee-human last common ancestor

The chimpanzee human last common ancestor CHLCA , CLCA, or C H LCA is the last species, a species of African apes, that human s, bonobo s and chimpanzee s share as a common ancestor . The CHLCA is generally used as an anchor point for calculating single nucleotide polymorphism SNP rates in human genetic studies where chimpanzees are used as an outgroup. The CHLCA is frequently cited as an anchor for molecular TMRCA Time to most recent common ancestor determination because the two species of the genus Pan genus Pan , the Bonobos and the Chimpanzee, are the species most genetically similar to Homo sapiens . Time estimates The age of the CHLCA is an estimate. The fossil find of Ardipithecus kadabba , Sahelanthropus tchadensis , and Orrorin tugenensis are closest in age and expected morphology of the CHLCA and suggest the LCA is older than 7 million years. The earliest studies of apes suggest the CHLCA may have been as old as 25 million years however, protein studies in the 1970s suggested the CHLCA was less than 8 million years in age. Genetic methods based on Orangutan Human and Gibbon Human LCA times were then used to estimate a Chimpanzee Human LCA of 6 million years, and LCA times between 5 and 7 million years ago are currently used in the literature. ref group note Studies have pointed to the slowing molecular clock as monkeys evolved into apes and apes evolved into humans. In particular, Macaque mtDNA has evolved 30 more rapidly than African Ape mtDNA. ref rquote right One no longer has the option of considering a fossil older than about eight million years as a hominid no matter ... chimpanzee fossils or proto gorilla fossils that have been clearly identified. 1. Monkey painting

cleanup date January 2012 Unreferenced date June 2007 Image Chimpanzee congo painting.jpg thumb Painting by Congo chimpanzee During the late 1950s biologists began to study the nature of art in humans. Of the theories proposed few had such a striking effect as those based on observations of primate paintings, hundreds of which were cataloged by Desmond Morris . Morris, along with his associate Tyler Harris, took these canvas paintings to indicate an intrinsic motivation for abstract creativity, expressed through an exploration of the visual field and color. Surprisingly, many of these painters progressed over time by expanding or contracting the area of paint coverage, the horizontal vertical stroke relationships and even the development of content among those taught some English vocabulary. Monkey paintings were exhibited in many modern art museums and experienced a fad following in the early 1960s. The cultural and scientific interest in monkey painting diminished steadily and little note is taken today.
