Doublecounting is a fallacy in which, when counting events or occurrences in probability or in other areas, a solution counts events two or more times, resulting in an erroneous number of events or occurrences which is higher than the true result. This results in the calculated sum of probabilities for all possible outcomes to be higher than 100 , which is impossible. For example, what is the probability of seeing at least one 5 when throwing a pair of dice? An erroneous argument goes as follows The first die shows a 5 with probability 1 6 the second die shows a 5 with probability 1 6 therefore the probability of seeing a 5 is 1 6 1 6 1 3 12 36. However, the correct answer is 11 36, because the erroneous argument has double counted the event where both dice show 5s. The inclusion exclusion principle can be used to compensate for doublecounting by subtracting those objects which were double counted. Population without doublecounting is an English translation of the phrase fr Population sans doubles comptes Population sans doubles comptes . In France , for the purposes of the census , the INSEE has defined several population indicators that allow people who live in more than one place to be counted in each place, to study and keep count of population movement. So each commune in France does not only have one figure for the population, but several for example students may be counted both where they study and where they live when not actively studying. A parallel may be drawn to English laws that allow students to register and vote in local elections in more than one place. Statistical view The figures given by INSEE for a particular commune are Population municipale a count of the people that live in a house, flat etc. in the commune Population compt e part those living in a collective or temporary manner e.g. prisoners, soldiers, hospital patients, nuns, monks Population totale the sum of population municipale and population compt e part Doubles comptes a sub division of population compt e part , comprising those who have a second residence in another commune and are already counted in that commune s population municipale Population sans doubles comptes the population totale minus the doubles comptes ref name R2151 cite url http www.easydroit.fr codes et lois TITRE V POPULATION DE LA COMMUNE R du Code general des collectivites territoriales S45094 chapter POPULATION DE LA COMMUNE title Code g neral des collectives territoriales accessdate 2009 04 14 language French ref The population sans doubles comptes is therefore always no smaller than the population municipale and no larger than the population totale . Plot summary The scene of this novel is Paris , where the branch of a well known London bank is being audited. A normally routine affair, this year s audit is different the auditors have reason to believe that there may be fraud or embezzlement at play. How do the auditors know this? A few indiscreet words overheard at a Paris nightclub . Our attention is turned to each player, some major and many minor, the bank officials and overseers of the audit of course, but mostly to the underpaid, unhappy junior and senior auditors, each a prisoner of his own private conflicts and aspirations, and each seeing the discovery and proving of the fraud as his chance for promotion. The novel makes the seemingly boring task of auditing understandable and delves into the hearts of those who make business their life s work. ref Marshall, B The Accounting Houghton Mifflin 1958. ref References reflist BruceMarshall DEFAULTSORT Accounting Category Novels by Bruce Marshall Category 1958 novels Category Scottish novels Category Novels set in Paris ... more details

A counting quantifier is a Mathematics mathematical term for a quantifier of the form there exists at least k elements that satisfy property X . In first order logic with equality, counting quantifiers can be defined in terms of ordinary quantifiers, so in this context they are a notational shorthand. However, they are interesting in the context of logics such as two variable logic with counting that restrict the number of variables in formulas. Also, generalized counting quantifiers that say there exists infinitely many are not expressible using a finite number of formulas in first order logic. A counting process is a stochastic process N t , t 0 with values that are positive, integer, and increasing N t 0. N t is an integer. If s t then N s N t . If s t , then N t   &minus   N s is the number of events occurred during the interval nowiki nowiki s ,  t nowiki nowiki . Examples of counting processes include Poisson process Poisson processes and Renewal theory Renewal processes . Because of the third property, a counting process is increasing and hence a submartingale . Then by Doob Meyer , it can be written as N t M t A t with a martingale M t and a predictable increasing process A t . The martingale M t is called the martingale associated with the counting process N t and the predictable process A t is called the cummulative intensity of the counting process N t . Counting processes deal with the number of various outcomes in a system over time. An example of a counting process is the number of occurrences of heads over some number of coin tosses. If a process has the Markov property , it is said to be a Markov counting process. References Ross, S.M. 1995 Stochastic Processes . Wiley.
