It occurs in two distinct populations One found in wooded and shrubby habitats along major Amazon Basin Amazonian rivers in Brazil , Peru , Ecuador and Colombia , and a second found in the comparable far drier northeastern Brazil. The latter is sometimes considered a separate species, the Bahian Wagtail Tyrant S. bahiae , named after the state Bahia , where the majority of its range is.
