This cartoon short was directed by Gerry Chiniquy , a longtime animator in Friz Freleng s unit. This cartoon short is set during World War I opening somewhere in France in 1917. The name of the cartoon is an allusion to The Dawn Patrol 1930 film The Dawn Patrol a 1930 movie by Howard Hawks that also deals with World War I pilots. The same title was also used for an unrelated, early Looney Tunes short starring Bosko , released in 1931. This cartoon does not fall into the normal pattern found in most other Bugs Bunny cartoon shorts. Bugs Bunny is not disturbed from a serene state as in most of his other shorts. Also, he is the attacker, reversing his normal role of the victim. Plot Tom and Jerry are flying to Africa in a plane, which crashes. As they float on a piece of wreckage, they decide that painting their faces black will keep them safe in Africa, and they begin talking like African American stereotypes of the time. After encounters with sharks, an overly friendly octopus, and a whale, Tom and Jerry make it to the mainland. They are confronted by beasts of the African jungle, and they meet some skeletal Africans that were retooled from the first Tom and Jerry short, Wot a Night , then are chased by savage tribesmen at the end of the cartoon. Plot The Stooges are Click, Clack and Cluck , paparazzi like photographers working for Whack Magazine If it s a good picture, it s out of Whack who continue to grate at their weary boss Vernon Dent . To get them out of his hair, he sends them to Vulgaria for their next job, knowing full well that taking pictures in Vulgaria is against the law, leading to execution. The inept trio are caught once they set foot on Vulgarian soil. As the firing squad is setting up, Curly requests one last smoke, leading to him pulling out a cigar the length of a hero sandwich. The wait puts everyone to sleep, and enables the boys to escape. As they try to avoid their captors, they end up in a local cafe, in which Curly pits his wits against a strong drink, and then a defiant oyster in his stew. When the oyster works Curly s last nerve he pulls out his gun and fires at it repeatedly. This gets the attention of the guards who promptly capture the Stooges and carry them off, upside down, on the bayonets of their guns.
