The 1935 Erdek-Marmara Islands earthquake occurred at 16:41:29 local time (14:41:29 UTC), 4 January, on the islands of Marmara and Av a off Erdek in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. It had an estimated magnitude of 7.4 and a maximum felt intensity of VIII (Destructive) on the Mercalli intensity scale, causing 5 casualties.[1][2] According to P nar and Lahn,[3] three aftershocks occurred in conjunction with this destructive earthquake that was felt strongly in Istanbul, Edirne and Izmir. The villages G ndo du, narl , and Asmal on Marmara Island were completely flattened, and the island's town center was damaged. On the neighboring Av a Island, 128 houses in the T rkeli village and all the houses of Yi itler village were destroyed. On Pa aliman Island, the villages Poyraz and Harmanl were completely destroyed and the villages Pa aliman and Bal kl were partly damaged. The foghorn building on Hay rs z Island was demolished and rocks at the shore fell into the sea.[4] However, the submarine communications cable running across the Sea of Marmara remained intact. In the villages Narl and Ocaklar on the Kap da Peninsula, and as well as around Av a, fountains dried and emitted noise. Since the earthquake occurred in the daytime, fatalities were few. Five people were killed and 30 got injured. Aftershocks continued until March 7, 1935.[1] References fa: - ( )
