The 1994 Java earthquake, or the 1994 Java tsunami earthquake, occurred on June 3, 1994 at 01:18 local time (on June 2, at 18:18 GMT) off the coast of Indonesia. The epicenter was off the eastern part of the southern Java coast, near the east end of the Java Trench.[1] This earthquake occurred in a region which is normally characterized as weakly seismically coupled.[2] It had a magnitude of Mw 7.8. Earthquakes with slow rupture velocities are the most efficient tsunami generators, and this earthquake was classified as a "slow tsunami earthquake" with slow rupture.[3][4] The triggered tsunami reached Java and Bali, with runups up to 14 m in east Java coast and up to 5 m in southwestern Bali coast. More than 200 people were killed in the tsunami.[5] This earthquake could be felt strongly across Bali, central and eastern Java, Lombok, and Sumbawa.[6] See also References fa: ( )
