Adalbert Zuckschwerdt

Adalbert Zuckschwerdt's grave Adalbert Zuckschwerdt (1 January 1874 1 July 1945) was captain (Korvettenkapit n) of the German raider, the SMS Cormoran, that sailed from the German colony of Tsingtao (Qingdao today), China, until she was stranded and finally interned at Guam by the Americans. Upon his ship's internment, Zuckschwerdt preempted the confiscation of the vessel by the Americans by igniting preplanted explosives and scuttling her in Apra Harbor. He was captured soon after by Captain William P. Cronan who called him "a brave man" for his actions.

Zuckschwerdt also served on SMS Roon as an artillery officer (Artillerieoffizier) when she visited Australia in 1913.

He was later the Konteradmiral commanding the Loire/French South Coast command in 1943. On 23 March 1944 Adalbert Zuckschwerdt received the German Cross in Silver as Seekommandant Languedoc.
