Al-Hasakah Governorate ( / ALA-LC: Mu fa at al- asakah; ) is a governorate in the far north-east corner of Syria that has the Euphrates river running through it. It is distinguished by its fertile lands, plentiful water, picturesque nature, and more than one hundred archaeological sites. It encompasses roughly the former Al-Jazira province. Districts The governorate has 4 districts (Mintaqa's): These are further divided into numerous sub-districts (nawahi). Demographics and population The inhabitants of Al Hasakah are composed from different ethnic and cultural groups, the majority in this governorate being Assyrians/Syriacs and Kurds, with minorities of Arabs, Armenians and others.[1][2] The population of the governorate was estimated in 2007 to be 1,377,000. Notable cities in the governorate and their estimated population as in 2006 are:[3] At the 2004 census, Qamlishli had a population of 232,258, Al Hasakah had a population of 254,622, Ra's al 'Ayn had a population of 121,708 and Al Malikiyah had a population of 110,327; however, these figures are presumed to be the populations of the nawahi containing these cities. Archaeology The Khabur River, which flows through al-Hasakah for , witnessed the birth of the some of the earliest civilizations in the world. The most prominent archaeological sites are: - Hamoukar:considered by some archaeologists to be the oldest city in the world
- Tell Halaf: Excavations have revealed successive civilization levels, Neolithic glazed pottery and beautiful basalt sculptures.
- Tell Brak: Situated halfway between al-Hasakah city and the frontier town of al-Qamishli. Excavations in the tell have revealed the Uyun Temple and King Naram-Sin palace-stronghold.
- Tell el Fakhariya
- Tell Hittin: 15 layers of occupation have been identified.
- Tell Leilan: Excavations began in 1975 and have revealed many artefacts and buildings dating back to the 6th millennium BCE such as a bazaar, temple, palace, etc.
