The Minecraft Builder's Book has some very nice things for you to try to construct, learn, and apply in your own creations! Minecraft: Retractable hidden spiral staircase with pistons

Description: First i just wanted to rebuild this hidden staircase www.youtube.com - but soon i recognized, that the staircase shown in this tutorial is not truly hidden, since you can see the pistons, even if the are retracted. So i came up with this build - it simply pushes the slab into the wall so the player can't see the sticky piston holding it. Just build the segment shown at the end of the video and stack it ontop of each other (with a 90° rotation for each level). the wiring at the working example is unnecessary long (just to be lucid and neat) but can be built very compact if needed. Of course levers can be added on both ends - an XOR gate should be enough to solve this problem. If you wish to use buttons, you might need a flip-flop.
