This nuisance was fixed only after doing a couple of things. Got an ancient Windows installer from sourceforge.net sourceforge.net The one used was 2.4.0. Installing it. And then installing the latest 2.6.8 version over it. (Probably not necessary but didn't any harm.) Next installed the resynthesizer plugin - using the Windows installer here www.logarithmic.net Then the updated Windows installer was used registry.gimp.org Then finally the patch was applied. Copying the patch files into the plugins and scripts folders in the Documents and Settings / "User's name" / Gimp 2.6 folder did the trick. (Placing them in Program Files area was no use - why??) Always overwrite older files with newer ones, and ensure that the plugin and patch files are available in the User / Gimp folder. That's it. Instructions above are for Windows XP - you many need to adjust for other versions.

That's because you've selected a blank area, which is because you have the wrong layer active.
